Remdesivir sells at 10x prices, NPPA unable to regulate as it's not notified as a 'drug’

State drug controllers have received complaints that remdesivir, which costs Rs 4,000-5,400, is being sold for as much as Rs 60,000 in the black market. Anti-viral remdesivir has been approved only as an experimental therapy for Covid-19 treatment by the drug regulator DCGI. According to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, remdesivir has not yet been notified as a drug by the DCGI and hence it cannot regulate the price of one of the most expensive Covid-19 treatments in India. The NPPA can only control prices of devices and products that are defined as drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
