17 states sue Trump administration over rule that could revoke visas for foreign students

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia sued the Trump administration seeking to block the government policy that would revoke the visas of foreign students who take online-only classes. The lawsuit claimed that the rule, issued a week ago, would disrupt months of careful planning by colleges and universities and could force many students to return to their home countries during the pandemic, where their ability to study would be severely compromised. About 40 higher education institutions filed declarations in support of the lawsuit. Harvard University and the MIT had already gone to court seeking to block the new rule.
